“Blah, blah, blah” and Insulate Britain

This week, the inspirational teenage climate activist, Greta Thunberg, spoke at a youth climate conference, accusing world politicians of “30 years of blah, blah, blah”.

Basically, she was accusing them of being all talk and little action. She’s right of course. For all the politicians’ fine words, promises, and bluster, carbon emissions continue to increase every year and time is running out. Sure they are doing stuff, but it’s nowhere near enough.

And that’s why there are protests.

This week an activist group called Insulate Britain decided to take direct action and stop traffic on the M25 (Britain’s busiest motorway) and the Port of Dover. The protestors sat down in the road, some super gluing themselves to it, and brought things to a standstill.

There have been the usual complaints from drivers stuck in the chaos and the usual weasel words from politicians that this is dangerous, disruptive, unfair and unnecessary.

Unnecessary. Well, if the politicians got on with their job and took measures to cut carbon emissions at the rate they should be, then the protests would be unnecessary. But the politicians are all blah, blah, blah, so direct action does seem to be the only way to make a point with them. They’ve ignored everything else.
